Interntional Success for CSC Girls
By Bob Maison
It is with great pleasure and not little pride that we can
report on Reka Gay’s winning debut for England in the o35/40 Home
Internationals in Cardiff this past weekend.
By now most club members will be aware of Reka’s dedication and improvement based on early morning training, a day in the office followed by a match in the evening. A Bronze medal at last year’s world championships and an international call up are just reward.
However, playing as part of a National squad is a different experience so it is great to report that Rek’s played excellently and gave England a winning start in their opening match against Ireland.
Older club members will remember that the club have an enviable track record of producing age group internationals. Starting with Carole Page, who won multiple national titles and then Margaret Chambers
In 2015 we even had two players in the same team with both Sarah Howlett and Julia Dolman winning all their matches as part of the victorious o50 side.
It’s not much of a stretch to think we had two this year with Reka and also Kate Bradshaw, who, whilst playing for Melbourn, brings her kids to Saturday juniors and also trains with us at the club.
As it turns out we could extend that “stretch” to three players as long-term Club stalwart Mhairi Dougal arrived to represent Scotland.
Club and county members will remember Mhairi being our team captain, a double county champion and organiser of the county tournament for many years. Mhairi, now a mother of two, married and moved to St Albans shortly before we moved from Histon Road.
So, I guess none of us would have thought “ the next time Reka and Mhairi play it will be in an international match”
However, there it was, with Reka getting home in 3 very tense games recovering from 4-9 in the third to win.
We are happy to report that Mhairi did win her match against Ireland and England went through unbeaten to retain their title.
A fantastic achievement from all “our” girls.
And- it’s all go again next weekend as Sarah Howlett goes over to Ireland to play in the o55 event. So, watch out for next week’s report.
